Elder Care for Los Angeles Seniors

The beaches, parks and hiking trails of Los Angeles are very popular this time of year, as the summer breeze is calling out to everyone's inner adventurer. With the kids out for vacation, many adults are taking advantage of the weather and hitting the beaches. However, this simple pleasure that nature has to offer is not something that everyone can enjoy. Adults taking care of senior relatives are among this group as they must be on constant watch of their loved one. Seniors, who are very susceptible to diseases and accidents, require a companion to monitor their well being. Because walking too much can be very strenuous for them, they are also not able to accompany their family on outdoor outings. It's a rather sad truth, but the work, as many Angelinos with elderly relatives will know, is necessary.

In order to alleviate these burdens, A-1 Home Care is offering senior caregivers to families in Los Angeles. Trained with 2 years of more of caregiver experience, our in home and live in senior home health aides are well versed in the field of Elder Care and are able to administer all other facets of care that range from temporary, Overnight, and even 24 Hour Care. In addition to these categories, our senior cargivers are also able to provide Parkinson's Care, Companion Care and Heart Attack care.

National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week/ A-1 Home Care Los Angeles

This month is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. In respect to this, A-1 Home Care has compiled resources that may inform you about this serious illness.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that often grows very slowly over a period of years. Before the cancer actually develops, there are early changes that occur in the cells of the cervix. While these abnormal cells may not actually be cancerous, these cells may lead to cancer. These cells are sometimes referred to as precancerous, meaning that they have the potential to develop into cancer if not treated.

All women, younger and older, are potentially at risk of developing cervical cancer at some point in their lifetime. The most common risk factors for cervical cancer include an early age of first intercourse, having multiple sexual partners, and having experienced a weakened immune system. Cervical cancer is most often diagnosed in women in their late 30s. It can, however, be diagnosed in younger as well as elderly women.

A-1 Home Care has provided senior caregiving services since 1991. We provide services for women with cervical cancer, and have excellent reviews from our satisfied clients. Take a look at our Caregivers of the Year for a sample of our excellent qualifications.

Improving quality of life with yoga/ 24 Hour Care in Los Angeles

Yoga can be good for adults of all ages, especially seniors. Studies have shown that yoga can be extremely helpful when it comes to combating stress, fatigue and pain. Some yoga poses increase stability and balance, which reduces the risk of fall-related injuries. Other poses can alleviate senior-related health issues such as menopause. Above all, yoga is a form of exercise that can help seniors feel younger.

What types of yoga poses should you learn to help battle common senior ailments? Even though you may not be able to twist yourself into a pretzel, there are plenty of stretches that are good for senior bodies. After all, yoga is about gentle movement, and not hurting the body. A-1 Home Care recommends trying out the following pose:

Seated Chair Post:

  1. Sit on a chair, keeping your knees together and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Inhale.
  3. As you exhale, bend forward, rounding your shoulders and bending your back forward one vertebra at a time.
  4. Let your arms hang by your sides.
  5. Hold this pose for three breaths.

Post Surgery Meal Ideas for Los Angeles Seniors

One of the best things you can do to improve your nutritional status when you are recovering from surgery, is to focus on whole foods. That means to choose foods that are “whole” or unprocessed. For example, an orange would be a whole food. Orange juice, though, would be a more processed version. A baked potato would be a whole food, while a French fry would be more processed and less healthy, having been fried.

One easy way to stick to more nutritious, less processed foods is to focus on the outside aisles of the grocery store. Most grocery stores are set up with unprocessed foods on the outermost areas of the store in the produce, butcher/fish, dairy and bread areas. By doing the majority of your shopping in those areas, you will naturally choose healthier foods.

Why don't you try this recipe for your post surgery health:

Chickpea Polenta with Olives

Ingredients

    • 1 3/4 cups chickpea (garbanzo) flour
    • 2 cups plain soy milk (soya milk)
    • 1 cup chicken stock, vegetable stock or broth
    • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
    • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme, oregano or basil, or 1 teaspoon dried
    • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    • 3 egg whites
    For the topping
    • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
    • 1/2 yellow onion, minced
    • 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pitted nicoise olives
    • 1/4 cup dry-packed sun-dried tomatoes, soaked in water to rehydrate, drained and chopped
    • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
    • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh flat-leaf (Italian) parsley

Directions

In a blender or food processor, combine the flour, soy milk, stock, olive oil, garlic, thyme, mustard, salt and pepper. Process until smooth. Pour the batter into a large bowl. Let stand for 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 425 F. Lightly coat a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
In a large, spotlessly clean bowl, using an electric mixer on high speed, beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until puffed and lightly browned around the edges, about 15 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes.
Preheat the broiler. Position the rack 4 inches from the heat source.
While the polenta is cooling, make the topping. In a small saute or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until soft and lightly golden, about 6 minutes. Add the olives and tomatoes and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat.
Carefully spoon the onion mixture evenly over the baked polenta and sprinkle with the cheese. Broil until the top is lightly browned. Watch carefully; this takes only about 1 minute. Sprinkle with the parsley. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool for 10 minutes. Cut into 8 squares, then cut the squares on the diagonal into 16 wedges. Serve immediately.
